Give a Little Whistle

You may wonder why these posts are not dominated by my travels around the East China Sea in the good ship Dileas. Well there are several slaps and stiles that I have to cross first. I have to register the boat. This is complex involving lots of paperwork, which I could never have done without the help of the very gracious Arisa san. There is then an inspection by boat specialist san, which is coming right up.

To pass the inspection, the boat needs equipment. 3 life jackets, a life buoy, lots of ropes, an anchor with chain, a black sphere, a black cone, a light, a red bucket and a whistle. I gather this together but realize that I have forgotten the whistle. I rush off to the 100 yen store where you can buy anything for you guessed it, 100 yen.

I mime blowing a whistle  repeatedly to smiling but confused assistant. She finally gets it and trots me over to a rack of stuff. I thank her.

Life is mostly froth and bubble

Hmmm, bubble blowing kit not really what I want.

I range around the store looking for whistles without success. Self doubt sprouts. “Why would they stock whistles? Who buys whistles?”  Anyway I try again on another confused assistant. I really put my back into it. At the end of the performances she cries “Hai!!” and we scamper off to another stand.

It being Japan, there is of course a huge choice of whistles, long, short, red, black, sport, camping, kids, grown up, key chain, silver plated, and with or without shamrock.

100 yen each. I buy loads, shop early for Christmas.

Spring air — woven moon and plum scent.

It is Sunday and Spring is in the air. Big Red is frisky and I can hear her snorting outside the front door. So I grab the big lens and mount Big Red for a morning of seeing what the world has to offer.

No More Soldering for Me

I am in Tokyo and it is snowing and cold. I am an Okinawan softy but off I go for a tramp to have a look at the Yasukuni Shrine.  It is not far from my hotel. This is the place that, when visited by a Japanese Prime Minister , becomes the center of diplomatic  storm. As usual I have no idea what is going on, but I think people er think that Japan  should not honor  its war dead because some of them got up to no good and also they lost.

Luckily the country in which I was born was on the winning side and as a boy and youth I engaged in a lot of honoring our war dead, usually in November.  Our Queen and all politicians, like everyone did so. In fact not doing so was unthinkable.

Here is a video.

http://youtu.be/7ZKP1PxMZWs

There is a museum at the shrine that I found very moving. The story of Japanese warfare is explained from medieval days, through military stagnation, Western incursion, through Russo-Japanese war, First World War during which the Japanese were on the allied side and indeed sent a fleet to the Mediterranean, which I did not know. There are a couple of rooms on the wars in China in the 1930s, which clearly have more significance to  Japan’s entry to  the Second World War than I can understand.

Anyway, you finally get to rooms on the Great East Asian War. Basically after a great first half the Japanese get smashed. Smashed big time. The losses in the armed forces are horrendous, Okinawa is grotesque, the destruction of Japanese cities is on a different scale to Coventry, then the atomic bombs. The Japanese had a really bad time. The  walls of the last rooms of the exhibit are covered with thousands of little passport photos of men who died in the war. It is awful. Many people are openly weeping and I also feel close to blubbering.

Another video from outside the museum.

Any Worthwhile Expedition Can Be Planned on the Back of an Envelope.

Much though I love my boat, about which I have written extensively, she is an antisocial creature. She only really likes me. We have had unforgettable moments together, but once another person is introduced, she does not feel at ease. Two people make her panicky.

So I have acquired another boat – a sailing boat. She is called American 14.6. I take this to signify that she was born in America and is 14 and one half feet long.

Mine all mine.

Mine all mine.

I can go anywhere in this boat – China, Korea, the Keramas, Iejima. Oh Lord, I cannot wait. I can fill her with food, drink and tanks and go camping/diving on lost beaches on far-flung sub tropical islands. What’s more, I can go with other people as the new boat, who I think I will call Dileas, likes up to 5 people.

Inaction in the face of fleeting opportunity is a crime.

Anything beyond what is needed for efficiency and safety is worse than useless.

She has a trailer. This means I can drive her around the island and launch her in the most exotic locations. Oh Lord, I cannot wait.

My house looks so much better with some boat art

Anyway it is Winter, windy and coldish so I will just have to wait. Here are some birds.

And the Living is Easy

Here is an example of how nice it is to live in Japan. My much-loved G10 breaks down. https://quietripple.wordpress.com/2013/09/15/the-murdering-canons-roar/

Who you gonna call?

Why the help number on the Canon web site, of course. They go through a thorough fault-finding exercise and admit that probably something is seriously crank. No problem they say “We will send a man to your house to pick up your camera.”  “Say what, I live in Okinawa?” No problem , what time would you like him, the guy, to come?”

“Er well I don’t usually get home until 7:30 ish.” ” Okey dokey.” says the nice person at Canon, “He will come between 8:00 and 8:30.”

Sure enough he, the guy, arrives when advertised with a special Canon box, wraps the camera for me and, smiling wildly disappears into the night.

A couple of days later Canon phone, explain what is wrong and ask if I would like them to fix it.

I say “Hai!!!”

Today there is a call asking politely if it would be OK if the guy drops the camera off at my house at 8:00?

I say “Hai!!”

I fire up the Cobb whilst waiting for the guy.

I fire up the Cobb whilst waiting for the guy.

At 8:00 the bell rings. I sign, give him, the guy, the cash and he disappears into the night smiling wildly.

The guy

The guy

Thanks Canon, the guy, Japan in general for making my life so easy.

Also thanks to esteemed colleague Micheal who to tell the truth   took the Japanese calls.

Home again.

Home again.

It’s a Hippie Thing, You Wouldn’t Understand

As I cycled to work this morning I was struck, not physically, by this sign.

Hey guys! Leave that hippy alone!

This afternoon I had to go to Naha, which meant that I could slink off to the stinking pond where the big-boy birds hang out.

That Kind of Girl is Always out of Reach, She’s a Beach

I spend a lot of time playing with my beach. She is a wonderful companion of whom I never tire. Today being Saturday, it being glorious weather, I  spend the morning with her and I ponder on why I like her so much.

One thing is she is never the same. Not only does she reserve little surprises for me but also she plans subtle but major changes in appearance to keep me interested. Recently she has gone all sandy.

What will she be wearing in the Summer?

What will she be wearing in the Summer?

She used to wear a lot more coral but this winter she dresses herself in beautiful fine sand.

She is usually very faithful, only I get to play with her. Sometimes I see the tracks of other men and although momentarily angry I am old enough to know that beaches can be flighty.

Just me today

Just me today

Just when you think you know all about her she reveals another unexpected personality trait. Today she showed me that there are shells encrusted in her hard bits by the sea.

How come I never noticed?

How come I never noticed?

She is also very slutty. You go around to see her some mornings and there are empty bottles everywhere. I have to clean her up and hide the evidence before she is fit to meet people again.

Last night's fun

She has many secret passages.

What I like best about her is that when I am with her everything around just looks more beautiful.

Something has Gotta Give

I went to buy an electric bike the other day because a colleague, who is an Iron Man champion, swears buy it. He says, “why sweat the hills? Just kick in the electric bit and all your pedaling is equalized.” This is a good pitch and I go for it. When I get to the store  I say ” I want one of those please.” The salesperson says, ” Man, you gotta be putting me on. You all is  so fat that  Bill Gates couldn’t afford to pay for your liposuction.”  ” Man these here bicycles are designed for thin Japanese dudes, you all is an elephant, a sperm whale, this little bike is gonna buckle and break under your weight as soon as you put y’all’s lardass on that saddle.”

I have to say that I had noticed that I waddle rather than walk, that I have chaffing marks on my inner thighs, that I have not seen my genitalia when standing up for some time. Children also follow me in the street chanting, “You all been  on a seafood diet; whenever you  saw food, you ate it.”

These are all well-known symptoms of fatness.

So I drag out the scales, which I have not consulted for some months because I live in Japan where people eat healthily and you lose weight.

How can this be?

How can this be?

This is probably heavier than I have ever been.

OK I have spent a large portion of my life trying to discover the Higgs boson which explains the mystery of mass. It has been discovered so there is no longer a mystery ergo I can shed these unwanted kilos.

I start by cycling to work. Not on cool electric bike for which I am too massive, but on good ol’ Big Red.

She ain't never done me no wrong

She ain’t never done me no wrong

I eat only fish and meat, which is what I want to eat anyway.

Tonight's eats - fresh tuna thing, Okinawan spinach stuff, egg, butter lemon juice, olive oil.

Thank you Mr Cobb

I drink no alcohol. This is tough.

I am in competition with esteemed Julia to see who can lose the most weight in the next month.

I will post the result.

You Gotta Move

I have been watching developments down the street with great interest. There is a very beautiful hedge of Bouganvillea that runs down the road for about a kilometer downstream from chez moi..

It is possible that the first European to observe these plants was Jeanne Baré, Commerçon's lover and assistant whom he sneaked on board (despite regulations) disguised as a man (and who thus became the first woman to circumnavigate the globe).

Anyway, first arrive diggers that take out a big chunk from behind the hedge.

“The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.”

“The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.” That is my house in the background.

Next they lovingly move each Bouganvillea and replant it one meter further back.

Why would you do all this work to gain one meter?

I ask my friend at the gasorinstandu what is going on. He say “Make road big.”

Well I suppose that works.

Can This Be Spring?

I get up and it is a truly beautiful day. The sky is blue, the sea is blue, Eskimo Nell. Such joy has to be tempered by misery and the balance is provided by a morning trip to the dentist for more root canal madness. The drive over is full of beauty.

Yes, that is cherry blossom. It must be Spring - on 23 January? Okinawa is a very destabilizing place.

After a lovely drive God evens things up at the dentist.

When did you last see your Father?

Anyway I paid the happiness debt and having been at work I then came home on a very beautiful evening.
