Flow gently, sweet Afton!

The title of this entry comes from a poem by Robert Burns, which I have always much loved. The poets beseeches the stream – the Afton – to flow gently lest his sleeping beloved be awakened. It is so calm and unhurried.

Tonight I went to eat with an old and dear friend. We don’t have to impress each other. We know each other’s beauty spots and warts. We enjoy the same things but can argue with causing offence. Kampai Rachel.

We go to a restaurant that enhances the feeling of wellness. In typical Okinawan style there is excellence without pretension and friendliness without thought for future gain.

Of course we eat superbly.

Fish deep fried such that the crunchy head is as much a delicacy as the flesh

Aya, the owner,  just comes over and chats. She has little English, we little Japanese. Doesn’t matter.

Flow gently, sweet Afton! amang thy green braes,

Aya with more fish

Ruins of Goya Champuru with more fish to come.

Go here. Get there straight on Route 58

Flow gently, sweet Afton! amang thy green braes,
Flow gently, I’ll sing thee a song in thy praise;
My Mary’s asleep by thy murmuring stream,
Flow gently, sweet Afton, disturb not her dream.

Thou stockdove whose echo resounds thro’ the glen,
Ye wild whistling blackbirds in yon thorny den,
Thou green-crested lapwing thy screaming forbear,
I charge you, disturb not my slumbering Fair.

How lofty, sweet Afton, thy neighbouring hills,
Far mark’d with the courses of clear, winding rills;
There daily I wander as noon rises high,
My flocks and my Mary’s sweet cot in my eye.

How pleasant thy banks and green valleys below,
Where, wild in the woodlands, the primroses blow;
There oft, as mild Ev’ning weeps over the lea,
The sweet-scented birk shades my Mary and me.

Thy crystal stream, Afton, how lovely it glides,
And winds by the cot where my Mary resides;
How wanton thy waters her snowy feet lave,
As, gathering sweet flowerets, she stems thy clear wave.

Flow gently, sweet Afton, amang thy green braes,
Flow gently, sweet river, the theme of my lays;
My Mary’s asleep by thy murmuring stream,
Flow gently, sweet Afton, disturb not her dream.

There were excellent Irish cigarettes, which I used to smoke in my youth, called Sweet Aftons. I wonder if they still exist?

Tender young charms

Ken Dodd

So ‘hats off’  to Ken Dodd a 60’s British comedian. He sang  a song called ‘Happiness’ which was a big hit at the same time as,

The Beatles “Can’t Buy Me Love“ 2 April 1964 3
Peter & Gordon “A World Without Love“ 23 April 1964 2
The Searchers “Don’t Throw Your Love Away“ 7 May 1964 2
The Four Pennies “Juliet“ 21 May 1964 1
Cilla Black “You’re My World (Il Mio Mondo)“ 28 May 1964 4
Roy Orbison “It’s Over“ 25 June 1964 2
The Animals “House of the Rising Sun“ 9 July 1964 1

The Supremes “Baby Love“ 19 November 1964 2
The Rolling Stones “Little Red Rooster“ 3 December 1964 1
The Beatles “I Feel Fine“

If you under-stress the H and emphasize the ‘EE’ sound in Happiness  – you get A penis.

The lyrics went like this.

Happiness

Happiness, happiness, the greatest gift that I posses
I thank the Lord I’ve been blessed
With more than my share of happiness

To me this old world is a wonderful place
And I’m just about the luckiest human in the whole human race
I’ve got no silver and I’ve got no gold
Just a whole lot of happiness in my soul

Happiness, happiness, the greatest gift that I posses
I thank the Lord I’ve been blessed
With more than my share of happiness

Happiness to me is an ocean tide
Or a sunset fading on a mountain side
Or maybe a big old heaven full of stars up above
When I’m in the arms of the one I love

Happiness is a field of grain
Lifting its face to the falling rain
I can see it in the sunshine, I breathe it in the rain
Happiness everywhere

Happiness, happiness, the greatest gift that I posses
I thank the Lord I’ve been blessed
With more than my share of happiness

A wise old man told me one time
That happiness is nothing but a frame of mind
I hope when you go to measuring my success
That you don’t count my money count my happiness

Happiness, happiness, the greatest gift that I posses
I thank the Lord I’ve been blessed
With more than my share of happiness

Happiness, happiness, the greatest gift that I posses
I thank the Lord I’ve been blessed
With more than my share of happiness

Anyway he was finally banned from the BBC for this joke:

“You know, men are hairier than women but women are hairier on the whole.”

This is a long intro to a happy day when Yamada san

gave me a present.

Thanks

Come in peace

This gift gives me great happiness. I admire Yamada san and I now own an original. Contemporary art.

Gander in the Pratie Hole

So it is the very end of October. The weather is er very good. 24 degrees, sunny, low humidity.

Not quite as blue

Basically the summer was a gardening washout. Er no, that does not describe the baking sun that burns everything to a frazzle very well.  My tomatoes peppers and aubergines all did very badly.  The only thing that prospered was the benni imo, purple sweet potato, http://www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink/foodanddrinknews/5718283/Purple-sweet-potato-new-superfood-to-prevent-cancer.html, which is impervious to typhoons and does not seem to need any water.

Very large seed potatoes

At my local agricultural cooperative place I blunder around trying to work out when I should plant stuff as there is clearly a different cycle from even  very southern Europe. However I have noticed a sense of excitement over the last couple of weeks. Planting season is, I think, coming to Okinawa – October is April. Last weekend there were trays of onions plants. Yesterday it was potatoes. Hooray these I know how to grow.

After many years of preparing beautiful drills and then banking up the earth, this time I decide to simply dig a little hole and drop the seed potato in. We shall  see.

Pratie in the pratie hole

So I put in a bunch of potatoes and will await developments with great interest.

Potatoes to the left of them, potatoes to the right of them, volleyed and thundered.

Magic Flute

So I have a big event approaching for which I will have to wear a suit.  Those I have balloon around me satisfactorily due to weight loss. One recommends me to go to a certain store. It is packed with, you know, suits but no people. I am made very welcome.

“If honor be your clothing, the suit will last a lifetime; but if clothing be your honor, it will soon be worn threadbare”

Charming assistant speaks no English and my Japanese lessons have not yet reached the “how to buy a suit ” chapter. Mime works and soon I am trying on suits that are too small for me. Finally we find one that fits, as far as I know,  and I cry, ” Hai!! Aregato gosaimasu.” I hate shopping and have to get out of there.

Things now get strange. The charming assistant suddenly turns into an in-your-face sales-harpie. She keeps bringing out suits and trying to force me to try them on. I am panicky. I want to leave. I do not want to buy another suit. The poor lady is almost tearful on account of my negativity and demonstrates many times on a calculator what a great deal I will get.

Finally  – thank God before I become abusive – I realize that I am in a 2 for 1 deal.  Having bought one suit, I get another for free. This seems very non Japanese but what do I know.

“But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth: I humbled my soul with fasting; and my prayer returned into mine own bosom.

It also turns out that I get two pairs of trousers with each suit. Expecting to leave with a jacket and a pair of trousers, I, in fact, leave with two jackets and four pairs of trousers.

Have I been ripped off? Do I care?

You can put a goat in a suit but it is still a goat. This costs more than I paid.

A lovely horse is always an experience….. It is an emotional experience of the kind that is spoiled by words.

Some words about horse.

Intro

A good week working with old friends on building THE website. Final night, you gotta eat horse.

Great Restaurant

Check the website

I did not know that the Japanese ate horse but Kevin did and Japan expert Michael tracks down a horse restaurant in Naha. Go there. We did.

Choose your dobbin

Left to right - Rib meat, fat from just below the mane, just under the tail meat. All raw of course.

Then

Not horse

Then

Whale - Sorry

Then

Soup

Then

Fish deep fried such that the head and backbone are crispy crunchy and totally delicious.

We drank

Awamori on the rocks

This was a really good meal. You have to love Japan.

The Cider Press Oozes

So the Fall comes to Okinawa. Not in the religious sense but in the seasonal sense.

I look at my thermometer, humidity measuring thing and to my astonishment the temperature is only

Parky

24 degrees and there is a miserable 55% of humidity.  Mind you I am writing at 9:00 at night. It has been 30 degrees  and above with 80% humidity since June. Does this mean I will have to wear a wet suit when diving?  Quelle souffrance.

Dusk

SEASON of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eaves run;
To bend with apples the moss’d cottage-trees,          5
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think warm days will never cease;   10
For Summer has o’erbrimm’d their clammy cells.
Who hath not seen thee oft amid thy store?
Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find
Thee sitting careless on a granary floor,
Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing wind;   15
Or on a half-reap’d furrow sound asleep,
Drowsed with the fume of poppies, while thy hook
Spares the next swath and all its twinèd flowers:
And sometimes like a gleaner thou dost keep
Steady thy laden head across a brook;   20
Or by a cyder-press, with patient look,
Thou watchest the last oozings, hours by hours.
Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they?
Think not of them, thou hast thy music too,—
While barrèd clouds bloom the soft-dying day   25
And touch the stubble-plains with rosy hue;
Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn
Among the river-sallows, borne aloft
Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies;
And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn;   30
Hedge-crickets sing; and now with treble soft
The redbreast whistles from a garden-croft;
And gathering swallows twitter in the skies.

Spike Island Shinto

So we break the ground on a new residential complex at the university.

This involves a shinto ceremony that goes like this.

First call gods/ spirits/deities, broonies down to us by using a shinto priest who sings. Then ask for forgiveness for the disturbances that needs must light on the construction of  a big building. This is mimed by representatives of the construction company cutting down a tree with wooden axe crying Ha! Ha! Ha! digging a hole with wooden hoes crying Hoo! Hoo! Hoo! driving in a stake crying Hong! Hong! Hong!   This takes place in front of an elaborate shrine and we stand up, sit down, bow a lot. I just follow what everyone else does and try to look as little stupid, red faced and ugly as I can.  It is very hot in the marquee. The poor priest looks to be in some dscomfort in his magnificent but thermally efficient robes.  He fixes this by walking around the site sprinkling rice, salt and bits of paper.

Retro satanus!

After some laying of branches on  the altar, the priest then tells the gods/ spirits/deities,broonies, that they can go home now.

Nice shoes

Please excuse my lighthearted account. The ceremony was very dignified and moving. I was delighted to be asked to attend.

The Broonie's seat

Thanks to Juliette for the photos.

As I was going to Zakimi Fair

Gentle stroll around the stalls at the Zakimi fair. Once a year street festival around the castle just behind my place -food, pottery, stuff, instruments, dancing, singing, storytelling. The weather has cooled.

Tell it like it is

Remarkable how many people we bump into that we know. Good feeling.

These things are called Sanshin - 3 stings. This one has six strings. Rokkushin

She spends ages carefully wrapping up my mugs and scrupulously tying the packet with hemp string.

Lunch

These are big, 3 - 4 inches across. They spin huge webs, one of which I walked into and got a face full of spider

White Gloves

So last week I was in Yokohama. Very enjoyable. Time came to leave. It is very early in the morning as we head for the airport.

Cab to the bus station which looks like at 5 star hotel. We get to the  bus stop and there is a young man in a uniform and white gloves. He greets us elaborately and shows us where to stand. The bus arrives exactly on time. The young man loads my companion’s bag into the hold of the bus smiling and expresses his hope that our journey goes well.  He does the same for everyone traveling to the airport.

Yokohama harbor from the hotel

So how to write this?  I like the fact that people help. I like the fact that no one tries to push in. I like the fact that no one is shouting. I like the fact that the young man with white gloves has no chip on his shoulder. I like courtesy.

When did Europe loose this? Did Europe ever have it?

On The Third Day He Rose Again

In my previous message I described how my Mac had committed hari kiri in sympathy with the decease of Steve Jobs. I was very sad but at the same time awed that my much beloved MAC should choose that day amongst the thousands of its existence to shuffle off the mortal coil. Was there a mystical connection between the machine and its maker?

Today  I switched on the MAC for old times sake.  It chortled and groaned and came to life.  Is this a miracle? Is this a sign from the Lord?

He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

Hosanna!
